Pet and Feed Supply stores sell many types of products that can contain pollutants. If spilled or disposed of improperly, materials such as insecticides, nutrients, and pathogens can be harmful to water quality and creek habitats.
Individuals and businesses that improperly handle and dispose of non-stormwater materials down the storm drain are both subject to civil and criminal prosecution.
Best Practices:
Keep Your Property Clean
Sweep up all debris, including the parking lot.
Clean up wet or oily spots with rags and absorbent.
Pet waste must be picked up and put in the trash. Never hose it down. Pee stained areas can be mopped up.
Pour mop wash water into an inside drain only.
Power washing / steam cleaning water must be collected and disposed of into a sanitary sewer drain.
Inform Your Customers
Label storm drain inlets with “No Dumping, Drains to Creek” decals.
Anything dumped at your site becomes your responsibility; make sure everything is disposed of properly to avoid violations.
Stress the importance of cleaning up pet waste, both on walks and at home. The pathogens in pet waste can be harmful to individuals, animals, and creek habitats.

Have a written plan.
Train employees annually on storm water regulations, spill response, personal safety, and hazardous waste handling and disposal.
Have spill cleanup materials onsite.
Have Safety Data Sheets for all products used.
