Piner Creek originates in the hills of Fountaingrove, where a dam creates Fountaingrove Lake, a popular spot for fishing and recreating. As the creek travels further into Santa Rosa, numerous tributaries, including Nagasawa, Russell, Coffey, Paulin, and Steele flow into Piner Creek.
The quiet and shady gravel pathways along Piner Creek in the Santa Rosa plain offer a variety of distances for walkers and runners. These access roads also allow Sonoma Water to conduct stream maintenance work that provides flood protection.
Piner Creek is a great creek for viewing birds and if you’re lucky you may even spot a river otter. The confluence of Piner Creek and Paulin Creek is a good spot for all sorts of birds, including mallard ducks. Mallards are dabbling ducks, meaning they tip up from the surface and reach down to sieve plants and tiny insects and crustaceans from the bottom of the creek. Belted kingfishers are a noisy large bird commonly found along Piner Creek. Listen for their rattling call and if you watch long enough you might see them dive for a fish.
Piner Creek flows into Santa Rosa Creek just to the West of Fulton Road and eventually flows into the Laguna.
